Macro photography is the celebration of the small things around us - delving into those microscopic spaces that aren’t noticeable in our everyday lives and seeing the world from a unique point of view.

It’s a style of photography that’s used widely by nature and wildlife photographers to capture smaller subjects and uncover the hidden worlds that are all around us. Achieving these photos requires getting your hands dirty and taking photos at ground level, but the results can be amazing - just like Bulgarian photographer Krasimir Matarov’s shot below.

What makes the image so affecting is the way that he’s transformed a fairly ordinary scene into something extraordinary. Your perspective on the world shifts. The same situation could be happening in your back garden right now, but the way that Matarov has framed and captured the moment makes it look otherworldly - as though the photo was taken on a distant planet.

If you’re looking to take the art of macro photography seriously, then specialised macro lenses - which provide high magnification ratios to help capture the minutest of details - are a wise investment, and they don’t have to break the bank either.

With the weather warming up, flowers in full bloom and all kinds of insects appearing out of nowhere, why not go outside and view the world in a whole new perspective with macro photography.
