Sony Z2 Screen Mirroring vs Apple TV

Sony Z2 Screen Mirroring vs Apple TV

Dear Sony,
I have worked in digital media for about 14 years, specialising in streaming media over networks. I feel I need to share my experience of the Sony Z2 on your forum here, so that others who may be thinking of buying one.

Long story short, there are a few things I like about the phone, such as; the camera, the ease of the iTunes media transfer, and the screen quality. However, these qualities are absolutely and completely overshadowed by the frankly shocking and appalling screen mirroring and media 'throw' function. I have an 802.11ac/g/n network, with little else running on it, and a high spec (£1200) Sony Bravia. I make sure I update the software on all devices as required, and have a good knowledge of optimal network configuration and performance. And yet, despite all this, the quality of media streaming of any kind between the Z2 and the Bravia is terrible. Streaming over the Apple TV is near perfect, and yet the Sony devices take forever to connect and then fail miserably to play the media. I can only conclude that there are fatal bugs in the software and/or firmware. My confidence in Sony products is low, to say the least.

I look forward to seeing this function made fit-for-purpose.

Thank you for reading 🙂

Hi there

I have passed on your comments and complaints to Sony, of which they should get back to you.  In the mean time, have a look at the Xperia Support forum, as they may have an answer to your problem.

Hi there chadbrogers,

Thanks for sharing your experience here. You will need to post over on the Sony Mobile forum though, as Quinnicus suggested.

Best wishes and many thanks,

Pascale_F.

I agree absolutely - I feel I was completely conned when buying a very expensive Bravia smart tv last Christmas by the product blurb which suggested screen mirroring was a valuable extra feature. Basically only offline content can be mirrored which is next to useless. I've also had to spend lots of extra cash buying Sony branded peripherals such as a wireless keyboard and a Sony Xperia tablet because the TV seems to be hypersensitive to working with non Sony devices. I would never buy a Sony product again.

I agree. For a huge multinational with all the resources in the world, the connectivity described above is accurate. For screen mirroring, you have to have the device very close to the tv and anything can disrupt the connection. Sony needs to get this right and very soon. I am a big Sony fan, but this is pathetic.
