STR-DN1050 useless without songpal (music centre) app

Sony has disabled the music center app. It is now impossibe to control this multi zone receiver when in zone 2.

It is impossible to play music in zone 1 without the tv on.

How is Sony going to resolve this?

Hi Jason,

I've checked in the guide and what you are saying is true, there could be some technical limitation but the STR-DN1050 is not supported at the moment.

Yes, the music center app has been disabled. This has left me completely unable to operate my device. I cannot turn it on, I cannot play music, I cannot change the volume. I cannot operte the device at all without the app.

what is sony going to do to resolve this?

Hi Jason,

Just wondering if there's a reason you can't use the supplied remote control in this case?

The supplied remote control is useless to me.

Allow me to explain further:

I purchased the STR-DN1050 a few years ago following life changing cancer surgery. Music is one of the few things I can enjoy now. I purchased this particular device as it was a multi-zone receiver, that could be controlled from anywhere in the house. When I have been moved to the bedroom (zone 2), I could use the music centre app to turn the device on, select and play songs. The infra-red remote control does not work in zone 2. Also, there is no tv to navigate menus in zone 2, so even if the remote worked in zone 2, I would still be unable to operate the device with the remote. The app has graphical menus that make control possible in zone 2.

The unit has been installed in a cabinet in zone 1 (to keep all the cable out of the way for safety reasons). Therefore the remote also does not work in zone 1 either. I also don't want the tv on just so I can listen to music when I have been placed in zone 1.

The STR-DN1050 was advertised and sold as having wifi control via the music centre app. That is why I purchased this unit, and that is the only way I can control it.

Sony have also breached the Uk sale of goods act:

The Sale of Goods Act 1979 requires goods to be as described, of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose.

Fit for purpose means both for their everyday purpose, and also any specific purpose that you agreed with the seller
Goods sold must also match any sample you were shown in store, or any description in a brochure.
The goods are no longer as described
The goods are not fit for purpose as sold
The goods no longer match what was agree at the point of sale
The goods no longer match what was shown in store, or what was described on the packaging, or what was described in the manual at the point of sale.

Sony are aware of all this - but just dont care!

How is it possible for sony to sell a product based on a set of features, and then after they have your money remove those features. This is fraud. How are they getting away with it?
