Hi all,
sorry if this is mentioned elsewhere but I couldn't find it anywhere.
I recently bought a BDP-S185 in February 2012 with the attraction of BBC iplayer and lovefilm etc. And its been doing it's job wonderfully until yesterday. I hhave just got back from a two week trip and when i tried to watch iplayer it's caused my Blu-ray player to freeze on the 'wallpaper' (normal blue line bckground thing, but without the menus).
It wont respond and after quite a while will just turn itself off. Everything else works, and I've tried turning it off at the wall and trying again, a factory reset (though I think thats only regarding the settings) and the firmware is up-to-date.
Has anyone else had a similar issue and if so, how did you resolve it?
Many thanks

My 480 now has iplayer again!
After resets, manual settings etc. all failed - I read a fix from another discussion where someone had gone into the reset section and erased all their personalized information. This removes the various players, iplayer included- from the video listing. But you get asked to reload as an option on the video tab. I did all this but it did not give a working iplayer. Freezing as usual.
Tonight I opened iplayer again and it is working - so I do not know if it was the fix that did it after switching the machine off and then on today or just random luck.
Any chance of a fix before Christmas for the 185?
Hi, my ISP is Talk Talk, I set up the network manually using the original IP, Subnet and Gateway values from the Auto setup. However, I entered the DNS values as per Talk Talk DNS google. The unit then failed to connect to the internet.
So I then started again setting all to Auto, after which I compared all network settings to the originals and found no changes.
The BBC IPlayer now works fine even on HD programmes. This was yesterday and I have not been able to break it again. I have tried several mains power recycles on both the S185 and my router, but all remains well.
Clearly this forced failure to connect to the internet followed by another Auto setup must clear the bug in some way. Note; my S185 has never worked with the IPlayer from new (5 weeks old now).
I will let you know if it falls over again but fingers crossed it is working fine now.
Got an s185 as a Christmas present and was happy when I saw u could get iplayer. Not so happy today when I tried to watch iplayer and couldn't get it work and discovered this posting about the problem ongoing since August! Have tried the various work arounds but none worked. Have ended up watching through the Xbox as usual. Seems to me Sony shouldn't be selling this product as being able to watch iplayer when they have known it has been a problem for 4 months! And for info my ISP is virgin.
Catmambo, Thanks for the fix from Dec 5th, it did seem to work for about 5 min until the video I was watching stopped and a message saying "A network error as occured".
This same message appears with Lovefilm. I do have a Bravia TV on which I can watch Lovefilm and BBC I player with not problem on the same network.
Has anyone seen a similar problem ?

Just bought one today as they are reduced everywhere down to £60.00. I knew it would work as I have another Bravia Internet TV which streams a treat on WIFI! Sad to say this one doesnt want to play IPlayer, and I was even more downhearted when I came across this site stating all the grief you have been getting!
Everything checks out network wise, I can watch everthing else, and as this is connected to another Bravis TV and wired to the router, did not expect a problem??
I dont think that I am prepared to sit around forever for Sony to get their act together with BBC, so it can go back to Sainsuburys!!
I wish all you disappointed customers of Sony a Happy New Year and I hope that your problem will soon be resolved
Have had time to tinker with this annoying issue over Xmas and managed to fix it on my player by doing the following:
1. Network settings, wired ip setup, custom, auto ip, custom dns - primary 8.8.8.8, secondary 8.8.4.4, http proxy 177.52.250.46 port 8080
2. Go to video section, highlight iplayer, press options button on remote then choose 'update list'. This should replace iplayer, lovefilm etc with a load of random South American apps, because the proxy is located in Brazil.
3. Go to settings and do a reset, scroll down to reset all settings.
4. Hard power player off/on
5. Go back to video menu- go options then update list which will reinstate iplayer. Try it! After a ten seconds on the usual blue wallpaper it loads for me.
Hi
I have three Sony blu ray players with internet content:
1 - BDP-S185 over a year old - i-player works fine and always has
2 - BDP-S185 one day old - i-player worked OK until I updated it - now freezes and device has to be turned off to reset.
3 -BDP-S390 about 10 months old - i-player never worked just stuck at 'loading content', then started working after update but now has gone back to being stuck at 'loading content'!
All other internet services like lovefilm, demand 5 etc work fine, there is clearly a software problem with i-player. I look forward to Sony sorting out this problem.
I have just brought the S185 from ASDA reduced to £60.
This was my first Bluray player and I brought it mainly for my misses to play her Gavin and Stacy DVD's and so she can use the BBC iPlayer to watch bloody eastenders etc... And of course Bluray DVD's.
I was shocked iPlayer would not work after the software update. I searched around and found this thread, Glad to know I am not the only one with this problem.
I cannot believe this problem has been around for so long. I have also read about the same problems in the reviews on Amazon also.
Sony seem to have washed their hands with this problem from other reading I have done, so I am going to do the same. Returning this back to the shop in the morning and will buy something else that actually works as advertised.
On a side note. Lovely looking unit, great size. Shame the remote looks rubbish though.
On the 29th December I stated that the machine was going back to Sainsburys, as what is on the box, namely IPlayer, is not achievable. However, last night I looked at the Digital Spy Forum, and someone there had the answer. I have the BDP wired to the router and also connected to a Bravia TV.
The remedy to get IPlayer was given as Go to Network Settings, then Wired setup, then manual, use the auto settings for most entries and enter the DNS settings. It so happened that mine was the same as the example given for Virgin.
He opted for NO Proxy, me likewise.
Today I watched the Queen concert on IPlayer for 1.5 hours and I have been back into IPlayer 3 or 4 times today!
Guess what, No visit to Sainsburys needed other than to buy a winning Euromillions ticket!
GIve it a try, it certainly worked for me, many thanks Digital Spy Forum.
Happy IPlayer viewing!!
