BDP-S480 Noisy Mechanism

I have a BDP-S480 which makes a high pitched whiney noise whenever I watch a DVD or Blu-ray. I cannot watch anything without being aware of this obtrusive noise. Sent it to Sony Central repair - they now tell me there is no fault and want £26 to return it.

If I Google ...

"bdp-s370 whine"
"bdp-s380 whine"
"bdp-s480 whine"

I find many users WORLDWIDE complaining about this issue, returning units 
and getting replacements that do not have this issue.

I have several DVD players including some cheapo supermarket specials that never 
make the sort of racket this S480 makes. 

There is no way one should be aware of such a distinctive noise when watching a film.

I am amazed at Sony's attitude - looks like I will have to battle this out.

Hey gussie any luck getting a replacement?

I googled around and found the players have this common fault, so irrating when watching films and i can hear the whirring. So far no luck in getting a refund/replacement as it is technically a working player.
