My BDP-S185 blu ray won't play some discs

I purchased a Sony Blu Ray BD-S185 a few months ago via Blockbusters.  Each time I rent movies, one of the 3 discs won't play.  First off I thought it was just the disc but having gone back to the store this time, the guy said that it was something to do with my "firmware" and that if I wasn't connected to the internet I wouldn't be able to play some discs.  Having looked at the manual, it would seem I can only connect via cable - this is impossible as my internet source is in another room - can't I connect via wireless route?  More importantly, is what he said correct?? It doesn't say anything in the manual about having to have internet connection to play discs successfully?  I noticed that it does say, however, that some types won't play - does this include "dual layer discs"? I'm getting cheesed off with having to swap some of my films for dvds just so i can play them!  Really would appreciate anybody's help! Thanks

Not sure on this but I know you don't need to have an internet connection to view those disks. There might be a coding somewhere in those disks that your player won't play or doesn't have the sufficient codecs.

Hi, can you give us an example of one of the films you rented? Just so we can look up the film details and see if there is anything specific about it.....

Hi,

the firmware will need updating on your player before you can play some of the latest discs, an internet connection has no bearing on disc playback, fair enough the router is in another room but you can get wired lan cables silly cheap and you would only need to connect for firmware update, or you can do this using firmware downloaded to cd from the website.
