The recorder is unable to play/record two different standard (PAL and NTSC) so if the DVD is encoded in NTSC it won't play.
One different bugs is that sometimes, even if they are both PAL, it refuses to play the DVD: in this case a workaround is to have the DVD (or even a DIVX) loaded BEFORE it starts recording.
