Sony ST5000 Sound Bar

I recently purchased the above along with a Sony KD55AF TV.  I had it installed for me but it turns out not to have been carried out correctly - surprise surprise!. I should be able to use the remote for the sound bar and press for example Sound Field and the information should appear on my TV screen.  It has never.  I was unaware of this facility until I recently read thorugh the manual!!  By the way half of it I couldn't understand anyway.  I visited the store where I bought it and the Sony Expert was unsure.  I have been in touch with Sony Support and all they do is provide me additional downloads of manuals!  I have checked as best I could all the connections but no joy.  Anyone out there who can assist?  Thanks  Atso

Hi provostkaypark,

Welcome to our community!

If the soundbar is connected to your TV with a digital optical cable then no display form the soundbar will appear on the screen of the TV whatsoever. For example, you will not be able to see the settings menu of the soundbar on the TV. The reason is that digital optical cables can only transfer audio signal and not video signal to show the menu.

Also, it's mentioned on page 29 of the user manual of the sound bar (available here) that the sound field menu does not appear on the TV screen for TV input.

Many thanks for your email. I visited Curry’s today from where I bought the items. They were reading the same page as you describe but none of them (including a Sony and Samsung Experts)could understand the phrase - sound field menu does not appear on the TV screen for TV input. How therefore can a layman like me understand it? For one night only when my wife had the sound bar handset did the settings appear – this is how I realised the situation. The next day I tried but nothing. Any possibility it can be a faulty sound bar?

Can you enlighten me on what this means? Also what is the point that on the same page it says right from the start to press the sound field button and the settings will appear on your TV screen. Sony themselves are not too helpful. I am being asked to take the sound bar to Curry’s. I told them they had this the wrong way round and they should come to me! I await their response.

Hi provostkaypark,

It means that when you select TV an input from the list of inputs available on the soundbar, the sound field menu does not appear on the TV screen which I believe is a system limitation rather than a fault as it's mentioned in the manual.

Thanks for that. I did have it working for 1 night when my wife had the sound bar remote but the next day – nothing! I am in touch with Sony Support and they are looking into the matter. I await their reply. Do you have the all the devices connected directly to the sound bar then to the devices?

Hi provostkaypark,

It's always best to connect all the external devices directly to the TV then connect audio devices via an optical digital cable ot via HDMI in the ARC port. Nevertheless, it should work if you have the devices connected to the soundbar then the TV.

Thanks again for your support. I have just finished an hour long call from Sony Technical Team and after following their instructions re connections etc. it made no difference. He is to investigate this matter further and promised a call back on Thursday PM! He had me connecting Sky Q directly to sound bar instead of directly to the TV. I have done a factory reset but made no difference. I don’t think Sony themselves are sure how to remedy it. I even had a visit from a Sony Expert yesterday and he went away totally confused and disappointed he could not sort out.

Batee thanks for your reply.  I did as you suggested and as suggested by Sony.  Please read latest message I have just posted.
