STR-DN1080 Randomly turning on

Just recently, my DN1080 has started to turn itself on for about 10 seconds and then turn off. However, this seems to happen around every 10 minutes.

Very annoying, and I can't see any reason why. It's connected to several devices, and has Bravia sync to the TV (Sony XE9305). nothing else turns on, just the DN1080.

Please help!

Got the same problem.
If I have the HDMI cable from my powered off Bravia A1 connected the receiver randomly turns on and off.
When the cable is disconnected the receiver acts normally. All software are updated.
This is very annoying, please fix as soon as possible

The only solution I found was to get rid of the Sony and buy a Denon. No
more issues now!

I have a DN1050 and a DN1080, and they both turn themselves on and off at random times. The DN1080 is hooked into an X900F, the DN1050 is hooked up to an older Vizio E3D470VX. The 1080 has Bravia Sync on, and the 1050 has the standard unbranded HDMI-CEC enabled (not sure if there's really any difference or if it's all just marketing BS). I'm not disabling an extremely convenient feature because Sony has buggy hardware.

I'd guess that if they haven't been able to fix it in the past 3 years, it's probably never getting fixed. I just ignore it now and it turns itself back off in 10 or 15 minutes or whatever the timeout is set to. If it annoys you enough (and probably for myself in the future), don't buy the Sony product (or don't use CEC).

It's only the audio performance for the price that pushed me towards these models. I'll probably try to move up from the entry level tier next time in hopes of finding better quality all around.

I was able to resolve this issue.  After texting every possible scenario (appletv, ps4, nintendo switch, and LG OLED) of unplugging HDMI cords. I was able to drill the issue down to my TV. Once I turned off standby mode on my TV (which really did not do too much anyways), the AVR stopped turning itself back on.

I have a STR-DN1050 that recently developed a similar problem - cycling on / off by itself.  After trying various remedies suggested online without success, I restored the receiver to the factory default settings and this solved the problem. (Note - you will then have to reset your preferences, recalibrate speakers, etc.)

  • Turn off the receiver.
  • Hold down (on/standby) on the receiver for 5 seconds.

[CLEARING] appears on the display panel for a while, then changes to [CLEARED!] .

I tried the factory reset and it did not solve the problem.  You would think someone from Sony would jump in with a solution.  I have a feeling it has to do with the combination of a Bravia TV and the STR-DN1080.  I’m on my second unit and the problem occurs in the new one.

Mine has just started to do the same. But it keeps changing sound type. I always have it set to Stereo output but it changes to Dolby output. What is going on?

Hi @easytalk

Is your amp up to date? https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/support/audio-components-receivers-amplifiers/str-dn1080/download...

If so, let us know what your connection map is and all the connected devices to both the STR and your TV.

Also, do you have a Sony TV as well?

@FarleyUK

I doubt buying a Denon will cure it. My Denon 1909 was doing this too. Just replaced it with the dn1080 and sure enough, this afternoon it turns itself on. Fifteen seconds or so later then off it goes again. Sony tv. Tv off at the time.

I wonder if maybe the tv is doing a background check for updates and that triggers the amp?

I really don't know. It happened again for me this morning. Also it keeps changing some of my sound settings and hdmi auto on seems to be working intermittently with my PS5. I have a Ps4/ps4 and X800 blurays player also contacted without and issues just the ps5.
