UBP-X800 can't update to Dolby Vision

I bought the Sony UBP-X800 UHD Blu-Ray player when it first came out thinking I was doing the right thing.  After all my Sony TV has received regular updates to make sure it can cope with different formats and sources.  Now I discover that Sony can't update this player to Dolby Vision because the chip isn't able to cope.

I know that you can never guarantee future-proofing with any product but I feel ripped off that just one year later Sony has brought out a new UHD player with Dolby Vision.   I emailed Sony's CEO just to express my disappointment politely - of course not expecting anything to change but just to give feedback on letting loyal customers down.  Just to make the point.  No response or acknowledgement even from anyone in Sony.

Not what you hope for from a respected brand like Sony.

Hi lgcebr,

This sounds frustrating. I'm just going to try to find some answers for you. In the meantime, maybe someone else in the community might have some ideas.

Thanks,

Pascale

There’s something about the Chipset, UBP-X700 Look Flimsy But £180 Seems a Bargain.

Thanks for responding.  Unfortunately I paid double that when the UBP-X800 first came out around May 2017.    Sony has been able to update my 2017 TV for Dolby Vision so I get that from Netflix.  Just no Dolby vision from the UJHD disks that have it.

It's just a shame that Sony didn't seem to think that there were a few other standards just a few months away and limited its then "flagship" product so badly.  Bad product design.

I've been a loyal and (with the excepion of 2 faulty TVs) satisfied Sony customer for 40+ years - hifi, cameras, AV equipment, radios, portable players etc.   I think this episode has taught me not to see Sony as a good, reliable choice any more.  That's just bad business from Sony - alienating loyal customers.

I can't financially justify buying a replacement UHD player so by thinking I was making a good product choice I actually made a bad one by trusting the Sony brand for quality and features.

Thanks.  I've stuck loyally to Sony brands over 40 years but buying the UBP-X800 was a bad choice on my part.  Dolby Vision was months away when Sony launched it and it was not cheap at the time.   By using a chip which could not update to Dolby Vision a few months later Sony effectively sold - then at a premium price - a product they must have known woudl be obsolete for Dolby Visionmjust a few months later.

I feel let down by Sony.  It's not even as if there's a trade-in Sony will do to get the Dolby Vision UHD player which came out just a year later.

I had two Sony TVs which were duds and Sony acted (eventually) honourably by replacing one and refunding the other so I could buy a reliable TV.  I recently wrote to the European CEO of Sony protesting a product being obsolete so quickly and did not even get an acknowledgement.  That shows contempt for loyal customers.  (I didn't expect a resolution from the CEO but just wanted them to acknolwedge they'd heard)

In this case I made a big mistake by trsuting the Sony brand for quality.

So this will probably my last Sony purchase after 40 years as the brand does not represent good design and quality any more after this episode.

I can't complain about my UBP-X800. It was bundled free with my TV in 2017. 🙂

I too opted for this player based on advice that compatibility would arrive in a firmware upgrade. Do we have rights under Sale Of Goods Act Sony?

i might suggest that we do as this was a key fact in the decision to buy bearing in mind that other players were already fully compatible.
