UBP-X800 can't update to Dolby Vision

I bought the Sony UBP-X800 UHD Blu-Ray player when it first came out thinking I was doing the right thing.  After all my Sony TV has received regular updates to make sure it can cope with different formats and sources.  Now I discover that Sony can't update this player to Dolby Vision because the chip isn't able to cope.

I know that you can never guarantee future-proofing with any product but I feel ripped off that just one year later Sony has brought out a new UHD player with Dolby Vision.   I emailed Sony's CEO just to express my disappointment politely - of course not expecting anything to change but just to give feedback on letting loyal customers down.  Just to make the point.  No response or acknowledgement even from anyone in Sony.

Not what you hope for from a respected brand like Sony.

Better make sure you have or can get an M2 then.

My favourite bedtime reading is a Sony product manual…

I was one of the early adopters and bought an original ubp-x800 on the premise that Dolby Vision was to be an update in the firmware within a short period of time.

as it transpires the chip in the player was not able to support Dolby Vision updates so I was left with a restricted player.

as the product description did not mention the DV update I was advised that I would not be entitled to a refund.

shocking behaviour by Sony. All I can suggest, which is no use to the current problem, is that we stop buying goods that are not “market ready” with false promises of future functionality. Clearly Sony cannot do this

I am surprised that anybody still uses a Blu-ray player. I’ve had my X800 since 2017 (bundled free) and I think I have only turned it on a couple of times since. Streaming services have completely replaced them.

Don’t forget that this is not just a blu-ray player. It handles 4K UHD and can upscale also.

I have an extensive back catalogue of Blu-Ray, 3D Blu-Ray and 4K UHD films and documentaries which I have owned and I will continue to own.

No need in paying twice for something!
