Dolby Vision has been available on selected* BRAVIA OLED and LCD TVs since April 2018. From July 2018, you can enjoy Dolby Vision™ on selected Sony audio-visual products, including our 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray™ Player UBP-X700. All you need is a simple firmware update: find out how to enable it here (or visit our Support site).

What is Dolby Vision?

If you’ve been looking for a new TV (or you keep up with the latest technology), you’ll have heard about High Dynamic Range (HDR). This new signal standard gives pictures a wider range of colour and brightness, resulting in much greater realism. (Find out more about 4K HDR here.)

Dolby Vision is an advanced HDR format that offers a picture that’s better than ever. It’s a step-up from HDR10, an older HDR standard supported by many HDR TVs and playback devices.

How does it work?

Dolby Vision provides metadata (digital instructions about how to display the image) to the device. It includes both metadata from the HDR source and information from the device about its own capabilities.

HDR10 metadata offers a broader, more basic overview of how content should display. Dolby Vision is much more detailed, optimising based on playback device. It also gets specific – with data for particular scenes or shots, rather than a ‘standard setting’ that applies to an entire film.

Sony’s UBP-X700

Launched at the start of 2018, our UBP-X700 Blu-ray™ Player puts top-quality pictures within reach. It promises to deliver the ultimate 4K experience, with better contrast, detail and natural colour.

UBP-X700 supports Dolby Vision after the firmware update. It also gives you access to 4K streaming services – including Dolby Vision HDR streaming from Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

There are other benefits to updating your home entertainment system with this model. It features conversion technology that scales HDR pictures to conventional display, so you enjoy amazing quality even if you don’t have an HDR TV.

If you’re a music lover, it can also handle a whole range of music formats (from AAC and 11.2MHz DSD to CD and DVD).
