There are few things more enjoyable than experiencing your favourite movie in surround sound. With the action coming at you from all angles you’re totally immersed in what’s happening on-screen, but this luxury comes at a cost. It usually involves a small army of separate speakers that take up lots of space, let alone all the wires that end up trailing across the floor.

This is where our Wireless Surround technology makes the difference. By wirelessly connecting compatible Sony speakers, sound bars and AV receivers, you can enjoy a multi-channel surround sound experience without additional speaker cables.

What’s more, just like our Wireless Multi-room technology, setting up Wireless Surround for your home is really easy. Let us show you how to get started…

Check your speakers are compatible

Before doing anything, you should make sure that all your audio devices are compatible with Wireless Surround. For a full list of compatible speakers, please see the following PDF.

You should also make sure that you have two speakers of the same model – one for the left rear channel and the other for the right.

Now, with all your devices switched on and ready to go, you need to choose one of two ways of grouping everything together.

Group speakers: SongPal

The Sony SongPal app is an easy-to-use control centre for all of your wireless Sony audio devices, and undoubtedly the easiest way to set-up your Wireless Surround system. Download SongPal from the app store on your smartphone or tablet and make sure it’s updated to the latest version.

Once you open SongPal, the app should automatically detect all of your devices. Find the sound bar or AV receiver that’s hooked up to your TV and tap on it, tap ‘Group with other speakers’ and then tap the ‘Wireless Surround’ option. Tap ‘OK’ on the pop-up that you should now be able to see to be, and you’ll be taken to the set-up page.

SongPal will now ask you to select the speaker you want to use as the left rear channel. Choose the correct speaker, make sure you can hear the test sound that should be audible from the speaker, and then press ‘OK’. You’ll then be asked to do the same for the right rear channel – select the correct speaker, check for the test sound, and press ‘OK’.

Now all that’s left to do is give the speaker group a name, and that’s it!

Group speakers: sound bar GUI

If you’re using a compatible sound bar as part of your Wireless Surround setup, you can also group everything together on the TV display itself. To do this, go to the sound bar menu, scroll to the ‘Wireless Surround’ option at the top, and press ‘OK’ when you see the on-screen prompt. Press ‘Next’ on the Wireless Surround TV display and then press ‘OK’ to go to the set-up page.

You’ll now be instructed to press [SET UP] on the speaker that you want to use for the left rear channel. Hold the [SET UP] button on the desired speaker until you hear a sound, and place it in the left surround position as indicated on the set-up screen; the sound bar will detect the speaker and display an on-screen message. Repeat the process for the right rear channel and the Wireless Surround group will be detected automatically, as indicated by the TV’s confirmation screen.

To double-check everything is working as it should, press ‘Connection Check’ to test the sound coming out of each speaker, and then press ‘Finish’. Now you can enjoy your favourite movies, TV shows and more in glorious surround sound!
