Amazon Alexa just learned a new skill!

From 10th November, you’ll be able to use Alexa to control your Android TV from Sony. Here’s what you’ll be able to do:

Voice control

Voice control will be even easier. Now, you won’t need to use the TV’s name every time. Instead, just ask Alexa directly to power on, fast forward and more (after the first time you use the TV name to give an instruction).

For example, say:

“Alexa, turn on TV.”

Alexa will say, “Okay” and the TV powers ON.

You say, “Alexa, volume up.”

Alexa says, “Okay” and the TV volume goes up.

Multi-TV support

You can also control all your supported Android TVs from Sony with Alexa. Complete the set-up on each TV with the ‘Voice Control Set-up with Alexa’ app. Give each of your TVs a different name, but select the same Google account for each TV.

How to get started

Simply launch the ‘TV Control Set-up with Amazon Alexa’ app on the Home screen of your TV, then follow the instructions.

The app installs automatically on supported TVs – so if it’s missing, your TV may not be supported.

Supported models:
2016 Android TVs
XD70, XD75, XD80, SD80, XD83 and ZD9 Series
2017 Android TVs
XE80, XE83, XE85, XE90, XE93, XE94 and A1 Series

Ok had an email through today saying this is available.. but no App showing on my TV (an A1).  Is this available in every country ? I'd heard it was only available in the USA and this article doesn't indicate either way.

Why only 4K HDR TVs?

Please please please make this available on all your Sony Android TVs. Would be very useful in the kitchen, but only just purchase a Sony 42" Smart TV and a 4k would be over kill in their. Only found out this feature was available only on 4k TVs. Really needs to be rolled out to all Android Smart TVs Sony produces so we an sing the praises, rather han being left out. People need to be made aware that this is an option as great for bedroom and kitchen TVs.

Does anyone know if the TV model kd-65xd8599 can be used with Alexa or if there are plans to add it.

Hey Sony,

are you likely to allow people on slightly older models to link Alexa with your TV's?

I have a 65S8005C, and I'm super-keen to get it hooked up if possible.

Thanks! :yahoo:

I have a AF9 model that is currently not supported to run Alexa and am wondering when we can expect a software update to remedy this or can someone suggest how to access this software as I am assuming its already in the TV because the AF9 is supported elsewhere in the world

Do you have the latest software version installed on your AF9? I can see the sales page mentioning Alexa support, so I believe it's just a matter of updating.

Hi Joe_Dohn
thanks for your response, have checked the software and its up to date. I
have to say that I have a brilliant picture but loads of shortfalls on a
very expensive TV, Google only does searches, will not change channels,
Alexa switches TV on and off raises and lowers sound only. Sony does
not subscribe to a TV menu.
Would love someone to suggest how I can get this TV to accept Alexa commands
Thanks

I've found a list of what you can do with the Google Assistant, but couldn't find a similar one for Alexa, it does mention here that you can control volume, change channels and more.

Have you tried clearing the cached data (this is under Storage - Internal Shared Storage) on your TV, and soft resetting it (holding the power button for a few seconds)?

If you haven't tried all that, maybe give it a go and let us know how things turn out.
