How to get fantastic picture quality

At the end of the day, what you want from your TV is a great picture. Our LCD TVs benefit from Sony’s long experience of innovation. In particular, we match panel technology with powerful processors.

All LCD TVs need an LED backlight. Frequently, LED lights are placed on a strip at the edge of the screen, meaning that certain areas are lit and dimmed more efficiently than others. They can also suffer from ‘blooming’, when light bleeds into areas that should be dark.

Sony’s XE90 is different because it has a system called Full Array LED Backlight. This places LEDs directly behind the screen, not at the edges. Its ‘local dimming’ capability means LEDs can be precisely controlled by zone. As a result, bright and dark areas of the same picture are displayed more accurately, at the same time. The XE90 is one of the few TVs on the market with the superior Full Array LED Backlight system.

The XE93 is the next step up in the Sony range. It’s edge-lit but has four rows of LEDs (not just one, as in competitor models), plus two accurate light-guide plates.

Conventional Edge LED TVs can often achieve a slim design but with limited contrast. The XE93 has Slim Backlight Drive+ – a technology that enables a slim design and great contrast. Slim Backlight Drive+ is unique to Sony. Find out more about the XE93 in this video:

ZD9 is our top of the range LCD TV. It features the Backlight Master Drive, a Full Array LED Backlight system with an ultra-dense LED structure. These LEDs are controlled individually (as opposed to in zones), meaning even more precision for light and dark on the screen at the same time.

Advanced technology

Our picture processing experience has led up to our most powerful processors yet: 4K HDR Processor X1™ and 4K HDR Processor X1 Extreme™. They’re both specially equipped for 4K HDR.

The XE90 uses the X1, which has 4K X-Reality PRO software that accesses an extensive image database to analyse and correct colour, contrast and texture at the pixel level.

The XE93 and ZD9 both have the X1 Extreme (also found in our OLED TV, the A1). 40% more powerful again than the original X1, it also uses databases for noise reduction (cleaning up the picture) and upscaling (enhancing non-4K detail and clarity to near 4K HDR quality).

Two technologies can analyse individual aspects of the picture. This means more refined, focussed enhancement. Conventional TVs attempt to optimise the entire picture, but Object-Based HDR Remaster (for contrast, featured in both processors) enhances individual objects and Precision Colour Mapping (X1 Extreme only) works on individual colours.

Both processors give you smooth picture quality via Super Bit Mapping 4K HDR, which addresses the ‘banding’ effect (in which blocky lines appear) that can be a problem with other TVs.

All the TVs above feature these unique Sony technologies:

TRILUMINOS™ Display – a hardware/software combination that can reproduce a wide range of colours and tones for more natural looking pictures.

X-tended Dynamic Range™ PRO – intelligent control for our backlight systems.

Design quality

Our TV design takes its cue from interior design. The idea was to create stylish-looking TVs that blend in with your home, in colours that complement the earth tones found in many living rooms.

Stands with ‘Slate-like’ bases are designed to create the impression that the TV is floating – drawing your eye into the picture on-screen and removing distractions.

We’ve also dealt with trailing cables in our effective cable management systems. For example, the XE93 takes cables through the feet of the stand on either side, while the silver anodised aluminium frame makes the TV look slimmer. We’ve even thought about the back of the set, which has an attractive geometric pattern.

Android TV

Our latest TVs are equipped with smart features to help you find and enjoy great content.

Chromecast built-in – Cast your entertainment (movies and TV to music and games) onto the TV from Android, iOS, Mac, Windows or Chromebook.

Voice search – Doesn’t just search by programme name, e.g. “Jurassic Park”. You could also tell the TV what you want, e.g. “romantic comedies set in London” or search the internet to find information like the weather forecast.

Google Play – Access to over 3000 apps, including movies, TV, music and radio.
