A client's C5303 phone doesn't read sim but when I remove the sim from phone it shuts down indicating absence of sim. What could be the problems, how can I solve it?

Could you test a different SIM card?
I've tried 4 different sims, still the same problem. Could the problem be with the card reader or is it software related?
There was also post about rooting and various apks for various phone. I tried using towelroot as advised but it also failed.
