Sony PC Companion detects Xperia P, shuts it down for Update and then fails in a lop with "unable to connect / requires 50% charge". PC with XP detects the Xperia-P is attached via USB cable. Ignoring the PC pop-up, Sony-PC-Companion 2.1 also detects the Phone. New Software reported OK. Xperia-S threads show lengthy circles of erasing Application MTP data - same result. No fix. Is this a known fault with Companion 2.1, waiting for it to be updated to support the download/turn-back-on phase of Updates for Xperia P ?
Solved! Go to Solution.
Bypassed the problem of Xperia-P not being allowed Download-Update, despite being recognised by Sony softwares and by PC. 1st approach relied on PC using XP-SP3 and 5yr old USB ports. Now used new-PC with Win7 and recent-USB, showing same Failure
BUT
with new-PC it offered more feedback pop-ups.
Now updated Phone, so the problem may be one of 2 issues:
- USB-2 is a definite pre-req and early-USB may be one step too early
- Hold Volume-Down whilst attaching Phone to USB whilst powered off - until the Update starts, not just a few seconds after attach (6+ seconds).
try this
Update Service (SUS)

uliwooly, Thanks for suggestion of "Update Service" which loads like something different to PC-Companion, but follows same logic sequence to the same error.
After PC and Sony-Software recognising the Xperia-P is attached, PC-Companion turns Phone Off, displays "Sony" and "Battery" and then fails - backstep suggests re-connect whilst "off" holding Volume-Down - fails. Update-Service asks User to disconnect Turn-off and reconnect whilst holding Volume-Down - PC sees a SEMC-Flas-Device - Phone displays Sony and then Battery and then nothing...
Any ideas on why Sony software is unable to download back to a Xperia-P it/they know is attached and it/they powered off ?
I see a specific mention of USB-2, coukd this be an issue of versions of driver of the PC USB port which Sony softwares are peculiar to ?
you are missing the drivers
restart your PC
turn off your firewall and antivirus -> turn off your phone -> do NOT run any program on your PC -> press and hold the volume down button and while still holding connect it to your PC -> the LED notification light should turn green and your PC should download the missing drivers

Same fail. Attach of Phone-Off gives Green Light, displays Sony then Battery. PC gives 2 audible beeps.
Disconnect and attach with Power-On allows Xperia-P, PC and Sony software to see Xperia-P is attached to PC. Update process 2-Prepare gets past Power-Off, displays of Sony & Battery - then fails with the please Connect / 50%-battery message.
