Do all Sony LCD screens only last 2 years?

The screen is going on my KDL 40W 4500 after just 2 years. Sony refuse to contribute to the cost and replacing it is only slightly more expensive than the repair cost. This was a best buy in Which? magazine.

I am now going out to buy a new TV. It will be my first non Sony for 20 years. I am now a non customer for any Sony product and will share my experience widely.

Wish I had known that my  Sony KDL32W4000 cost me £750 in May 2008  lasted only  5 years and 3 months.    3 months after the 5 year Guarantee expired, before the LCD failed and was deemed to expensive to repair by SVS Sonys repair specialists.

I have since bough another sony though KDL42W653 with 5 year Guarantee.

Under "The Sale of Goods Act 1979" TV is expected to last six years, and as this is an inherent fault stick with it.

Incorrect - The interpretation of the Sale of Goods Act 1979 is that Good must last a reasonable amount of time.  This can be any where up to six years from date of purchase.  However the Sale of Goods Act 1979 does not define which products should reasonably expect to last 6 years.  There is also a clause in the act of where it states that a repair or replacement cannot be expected if it is impossible or disproportionate.

Your first point of call is the retailer you purchased it from as under UK Contract Law, it is you and the retailer that has a contract.  You would be best to contact the retailers Head Office, as if you speak to a 16year old pimply faced youth at the local shop, your going to get a blank face.

You can also request an indepentant report, and can claim the costs back of upto £200.

Do all Sony LCD screens only last 2 years?

No, my LCD panel lasted 38 months!

Background

I am the owner of a Sony Bravia KDL-32NX503 LCD TV. A fine horizontal black line (looks like somebody has drawn a pencil line on the screen with a straight edge) has appeared on the TV screen that can be seen approximately 1/3 down from the top of the screen.

There has also been an intermittent issue with green pixels appearing on the right hand side of the screen, however, I do not know whether this has any connection with the horizontal line. I have done some research on the net (by googling "Sony+Bravia+black+line) and other Sony Bravia customers have referred to this issue.

I really like my Sony TV, however, I do not believe it is of satisfactory quality given that it was purchased in January 2011 and I do not believe it is reasonable for the TV to have developed a fault such as this one. I do not believe this issue is due to wear and tear because the TV has been used for less than 5000 hours and one would expect a Sony TV to last considerably longer (at least 6 years) or 60,000 to 100,000 hours of use.

When I visited my local Sony Repair Centre, I explained the picture fault to the representative who in turn spoke to an engineer. It was suggested it was more than likely a faulty panel. I was told it would cost anything between £250 to £300 to replace the panel and I would be better putting the inspection fee towards the cost of a new TV. I could not believe what I was hearing.

After contacting Sony Service and support on several occasions, I was only offered £100 towards the cost of the repair.

I have been a loyal Sony customer since my first Walkman back in the 80's and this is not the kind of after service that I would have expected from a market leader such Sony.

A very disappointed.
