Does my TV support ARC

I have a KDL-40D3500 TV. There are multiple versions of the handbook but there is no specific statement that confirms this particular specification.

I have plugged in a BDV-E290 and the TV appears to be switching to Audio System mode yet I get no sound from the AV system.

How can I confirm that the TV supports ARC? What version of HDMI would be on a set from 2008?

HMDI ARC was only widespread in 2010 so your TV is not HDMI compliant

Can you clarify then why with the Home Theatre system switched on when I turn on the TV it displays the banner "Audio System Active" and it turns off the TV speakers. When the TV comes on the HT system will switch to TV mode.

In otherwords the Home Theatre is expecting audio from the TV, the TV is expecting the audio to be output via the Home Theatre so mutes its speakers yet there is no sound from the HT system. Where is the break in the audio path? What connection is missing?

You could always output the audio via TOSLINK/Optical as the TV may have this output?

Thanks
