DVD recorder (RDR-HXD890) Guide not working

When I press GUIDE on the remote of my Sony DVD recorder (RDR-HXD890) nothing happens. The message on the screen is 'This function cannot be used now'
Front panel reads L1.
Help! I can't record anything.
This has arisen since installing a new TV and replacing scart lead with HDMI. Input is via external aerial.
Ideas please.

A friend of mine has the identical issue on the same recorder.
