Playing films on Hard Drive

I connect a external drive to my TV with a USB lead and that is fine.I have now replaced my old TV in the bedroom but when I try and play the films on there it seems they are in the wrong format and need to be in MPEG1/2 format.If I converted them to MPEG1/2 would they still play on my Sony TV.The Sony model is a KDL-42W653A
