Add Hardware Wizard (USBSTOR.sys)

Two weeks ago I bought a Western Digital 500 gig My Book to back up my notebook and hold non-essential files.

Unfortunately I have been unable to install it, as soon as I insert the USB the Add New Hardware wizard pops up and asks for a driver.

I’ve tried it on another PC and it started without a problem.

After checking the Western Digital support pages and reinstalling XP I was still getting the same problem so I contacted Western Digital who informed me to point the wizard to: C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\USBSTOR.sys.
That’s fine but the hardware wizard is looking for an .inf file (preferably autorun.inf) and doesn’t acknowledge the Drivers folder (as it doesn’t contain any .inf files).

I’m at a lost; any suggestions would be gratefully received.

I managed to solve the problem, but this may be of help to others.

Xp recognised the My Book and set about looking for the autorun.inf file. The autorun.inf file must refer to autorun.run which is in a sub-folder and couldn't be seen.

I simply copied autorun.run into the top folder and it worked.

Nice one, was considering one of those for future purchases.
