Hi everyone!
If you have recently bought a new VGN-CS11 series notebook, I'd ask that you take a moment to read this post.
Since I unboxed the new notebook, I have been experiencing strange noises from the fan unit evey time it operates. Before, it used to be simply that every time the fan stopped working, it made a soft "growl" noise (probably due to some internal vibration) for a mere second or two. Recently, however, it has also begun to make a strange, barely audible "clicking sound" as the fan starts up and operates, accompanied by the "growl" at the end, like before. At first, I was led to believe that it was just the normal operating noise that the fan made (although quite annoying!), but due to these recent developments, I am more and more convinced that this is some problem or malfunction that perhaps, will only get worse with time.
Other CS11 users have already posted in the thread "Problem with fan!!" that they also experience this problem, and, from what I've been able to gather, it does not seem like an isolated problem... but this is what we need to confirm.
That is the purpose of this thread.
I would like to ask and encourage all CS11 users to post in this thread if they also experience the same "problem" with the fan (abnormal noises that are clearly distinguishable from normal operation) or anything fan-related, especially if you have experienced them since you bought the notebook and haven't done anything that could "provoke" them (like dropping the notebook or hitting it in some way, blocking the ventilation vents, etc...). This is to have a general scope that this is not an isolated problem that is only happening to a few, and that way, perhaps Sony will take an interest and take the necessary measures to correct this problem if this, in fact, turns out to be a generalised problem.
I have already created a new case with e-Support regarding this issue. Note that these are brand new laptops that have been out on sale for barely a month, and now would be a good time to correct any problems that may arise. If this turns out to be a common problem for most CS11 users, then we should all contact Vaio-Link or e-Support and report the problem, so that Sony will take this problem into consideration if enough people have it.
Remember: the sooner, the better!
Also, perhaps it would also be of interest that those CS11 users that DON'T experience this problem also post in this thread, to see how many DO and how many DON'T... it may be interesting to also know.
Ok... without taking any more of your time, I leave this thread to fellow CS11 users and to anyone that might be able to lend a helping hand. Thanks!!!
Hey Guys,
I tried to give it a little time, updated the bios see if it made a difference. Nope the noise got worse and so I raised a ticket and the support guy knew that the new replacement fans were failing after a few months of being replaced. So arranged for my laptop to be sent off AGAIN... Wasted my whole day off waiting for the DHL guy who per chance said that my laptop was the third one (same model)he has picked up to be sent for repair. I personally think that Sony should scrap the fans they're using get new ones. Recall the entire range and fix all our fans for free... But then again that would probably cost too much money...
So they have now replaced my fan with what they say is a new and improved part. I had the assurance from the support guy that my fan WILL NOT fail again. Now I don't believe him as that was what was said the when I had it replaced the first time. I called Comet where I bought my laptop from for some advice. Clearly under the Sales of Good Act the Laptop is not fit for purpose. However I was just bounced back to Sony who said well the laptop is fixed what more do you want (somewhere along those lines). My warranty runs out in Dec. Just wondering if anyone knows how long the extended warranty that they have announced is?
Personally I am so annoyed that I have written into watchdog (for those in the UK it's on BBC1 and they seem to deal with greivances with products and other things) to vent out my frustrations. I reckon if we get enough people writing into the BBC hopefully they'll pick up on the story and approach sony. You don't buy a £800 plus laptop only for things to go wrong in less than and year and have to send it off for multiple repairs. I don't depend on my laptop for work but what about all of you who do? It's not right!
Will let you guys know how the third repair went. Was tolld I have a 6month gaurantee for parts replaced. Whoop de doo... Can't wait for that third cleaning cloth...

You're right Foxynats, at least the turn around was quick. I sent my laptop on Tues, got the text Wednesday and it was delivered back to me on Thursday.
I sent an email to watchdog don't know if they will pick it up but we shall see. I did inquire about getting a refund and surprise surprise I was bounced back and forth. No one wants to take responsibility for it.
So far the fan seems fine. Sounds like the first time I got it. We shall see how long it lasts. If I have to send it back the fourth time I'm going straight to Comet and getting a refund or an exchange. I must have some rights somewhere! I hope this is a "new" part and not and old range of fans which are doomed to fail again.
It's a sad state of affairs when I'm waiting for my laptop to fail again...

Hi dianaosmund,

That's the sound my fan is making.. Quite annoying to be at the library and have your laptop making those weird noises
I got an answer to my email saying I should contact the VAIO-Link customer support by phone, and so I did.
The case id I was given with the email is worthless, apparently, so I got a new one.
Then I had to tell some guy who didn't speak proper portuguese what's wrong with my computer and we agreed I would call again on december 11th (since I really need my laptop this week) and they will pick it up on monday the 14th.
Just before I hung up I asked "but are you aware this is a mass-spread issue with the cpu fans like Sony UK and US acknowledged?"
He said something like "oh I know about some laptops who had some issues but don't worry we'll get your laptop and we'll check the problem"
That isn't very reassuring is it?
So please Thalamus, I really need your help. Should I contact Sony Europe or something to get my VAIO fixed? Because the portuguese guys apparently don't know what they are doing..
The case # I posted earlier isn't my current one, like I said in the begging, if you need it I'll PM you

Hi pacheco, im Portuguese too and i bought mine at "Fnac".
I got the same noise as you, and im considering sending mine in january for the 1st repair.
They got a policy that is... if in 3 repairs the problem isnt fixed, you got your money back.
Bought my Vaio VGN CS11Z/R (with the same fan noise problem) at John Lewis Oxford Street who said Sony wouldn't even look at it if I sent it in for repair. So I brought it to a different repair shop where they found that the fan doesn't sit straight in the heat sink. So whenever the fan goes on and turns, it would whirr because it touches the sides somehow.
Another thing: you might want to have it checked for dust - mine had a lot of it (and my notebook is brand new). It might help you cleaning that out. Unfortunately, that helped me only marginally. Noise just sounds different now, but still extremely loud.
Does anyone of you know a compatible fan for this model? (It doesn't make sense buying the same one again). I would really appreciate if you could post your reply (thanks in advance!)
In the meantime, I'm going to get myself an external cpu cooling fan - see whether that works. That noise is so annoying, my patience is running out. 2 words to Sony: never again.
