Hi everyone!
If you have recently bought a new VGN-CS11 series notebook, I'd ask that you take a moment to read this post.
Since I unboxed the new notebook, I have been experiencing strange noises from the fan unit evey time it operates. Before, it used to be simply that every time the fan stopped working, it made a soft "growl" noise (probably due to some internal vibration) for a mere second or two. Recently, however, it has also begun to make a strange, barely audible "clicking sound" as the fan starts up and operates, accompanied by the "growl" at the end, like before. At first, I was led to believe that it was just the normal operating noise that the fan made (although quite annoying!), but due to these recent developments, I am more and more convinced that this is some problem or malfunction that perhaps, will only get worse with time.
Other CS11 users have already posted in the thread "Problem with fan!!" that they also experience this problem, and, from what I've been able to gather, it does not seem like an isolated problem... but this is what we need to confirm.
That is the purpose of this thread.
I would like to ask and encourage all CS11 users to post in this thread if they also experience the same "problem" with the fan (abnormal noises that are clearly distinguishable from normal operation) or anything fan-related, especially if you have experienced them since you bought the notebook and haven't done anything that could "provoke" them (like dropping the notebook or hitting it in some way, blocking the ventilation vents, etc...). This is to have a general scope that this is not an isolated problem that is only happening to a few, and that way, perhaps Sony will take an interest and take the necessary measures to correct this problem if this, in fact, turns out to be a generalised problem.
I have already created a new case with e-Support regarding this issue. Note that these are brand new laptops that have been out on sale for barely a month, and now would be a good time to correct any problems that may arise. If this turns out to be a common problem for most CS11 users, then we should all contact Vaio-Link or e-Support and report the problem, so that Sony will take this problem into consideration if enough people have it.
Remember: the sooner, the better!
Also, perhaps it would also be of interest that those CS11 users that DON'T experience this problem also post in this thread, to see how many DO and how many DON'T... it may be interesting to also know.
Ok... without taking any more of your time, I leave this thread to fellow CS11 users and to anyone that might be able to lend a helping hand. Thanks!!!
I bought my Sony Vaio in February this year.
It's been fine - the fan whirred a bit, but nothing I couldn't cope with. However, a few weeks ago, the fan suddenly started to make the most horrific loud grinding, rattling and vibrating noise. I've never dropped the laptop or anything like that. I was just on the internet and it started doing that after an hour or so. Turned if off, left it a couple of days, then turned it on again, and did the same thing after about 20 minutes! It sounds awful.
However, I work in a second-hand store, and someone had sold us a CS11S, and it was brand new - never been touched. So, thought I would buy it (got it a decent price) Would this be covered in the year guarantee, then? I have the receipt of purchase with the model number on and everything. So. I don't know.
I so need this sorting; I'd just buy a fan and fit it myself... but, if Sony will replace it at least once, it'd be okay. I guess!
Any advice would be appreciated Thanks!

Have you registered your CS11 Vaio or had the person who sold it to you already registered the VAIO.?
You can check if the Vaio's registered in your name by using the following link: Register your VAIO
Just phoned them, it's getting collected on Monday. It's in guarantee (unless they find physical damage like I've ripped screws out and such...! £150 to send back otherwise haha. Never been damaged, unless DHL drop in in collection...)
So, hopefully, I'll have a functioning fan (for a couple of months, anyway).
I heard the guy on the phone telling me I don't need to send the charger, can't remember if he told me not to include the battery or not 😕

Yes, just registered it today in my name, before registering for this forum! So it's all in my name and everyhing, that was what I was worried about, initially.

Got mine back today
The prompt service (had it back in 4 days) was nice, however, the fan still does live a life of its own coming on, going off every 20 secs.
Hopefully, this will take care of things. Judging by how many people here who already sent theirs in 3-4 times im skeptical of course. Like so many noted before me, what to do when the warranty run out and we still need to send it in for repairs every 3 months?
Anyways, Im happy to have it back
This is beginning of sept when I wrote this
Got my laptop back. All seems well at the moment so far it's pretty quiet though I have only had it on for about 20mins. As I am I writing this it did it's usual whir up but it seems the same starting and stopping every so often. No other unusual noises. I'm not sure but I assume it's fixed I spoke to the help centre and they said they changed the fan. Who knows time will tell. Unfortunately I am now forever going to watching out for the next thing that goes wrong with the laptop the only problem is I have a few months left on the warranty. I don't know if I should get the extended warranty... You guys have any ideas/opinions?
All I want is a laptop that works... I hope this is the end of the problems...
Oh and for my troubles I have yet another cleaning cloth... Gee thanks.
Right... That is it.
I have had enough with that laptop... my work is going to have to suffer as i am going to send it back. I am going to phone up Sony first thing tomorrow morning. I seriously cannot work with this laptop and there is no way i can take it near any clients - it is whirling so bad it sounds like it is going to explode!!
Has anyone who has had the fan replaced recently (since the announcement was made that the fans are poo) had any problems? as i honestly cannot afford to send it back any again.
Hey all,
Sorry I've been away for some time, it's that my fan almost died on me and I had no other choice but to send it to sony for another fan replacement... and this has been my 4th time!!!! I just got it back yesterday and from what I can tell, the fan is nice and quiet... at least for the moment. I can't say exactly, but I think it's the same model fan that I was given last time, the one that seemed ok for a few months until it started to make all those strange noises - believe me, I've become quite the expert "fan-listener" and can quickly identify the sound to know if it's a new model or a previous one I've already had!! Thanks Sony! I reckon that's the only thing I get out of this whole experience... pay 1100 euros to train my ears to tell fan models apart! Yay!
To those of you like foxynats that don't know if they should send it again or not, if the noise isn't that bad, yet, I'd recommend that you wait a while, at least until those of us that have gotten their fans replaced after the announcement was made have a little more time to monitor how ours are going and see if it's worth sending or not. However, if you can't stand the noise, send it and get at least a few months worth of quiet in the meantime...
However, I must say that the repair went way quicker than I had anticipated. From the day my laptop was picked up, I had it back in my hands in just one week.
Oh, another curiosity... after all I've been through since last December when I opened my support case and all the times I've had to send it and everything, the girl from sony that attended me when I arranged for the pickup DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THAT SONY HAD MADE AN ANNOUNCEMENT ADDRESSING THIS ISSUE!!!! Unbelievable...
If the fan goes haywire yet again, even after the announcement they made, I won't settle for anything short of a full refund. I would recommend all of those that have sent it three or more times for repairs to do the same if the fan they get replaced after the announcement also turns out faulty.
I suppose we will have to wait and see... I'll keep you posted on how my fan turns out.
Cheers! And good luck to us all...
