Attention VGN-CS11 users and SONY!! Problem with FAN!

Hi everyone!

If you have recently bought a new VGN-CS11 series notebook, I'd ask that you take a moment to read this post.

Since I unboxed the new notebook, I have been experiencing strange noises from the fan unit evey time it operates. Before, it used to be simply that every time the fan stopped working, it made a soft "growl" noise (probably due to some internal vibration) for a mere second or two. Recently, however, it has also begun to make a strange, barely audible "clicking sound" as the fan starts up and operates, accompanied by the "growl" at the end, like before. At first, I was led to believe that it was just the normal operating noise that the fan made (although quite annoying!), but due to these recent developments, I am more and more convinced that this is some problem or malfunction that perhaps, will only get worse with time.

Other CS11 users have already posted in the thread "Problem with fan!!" that they also experience this problem, and, from what I've been able to gather, it does not seem like an isolated problem... but this is what we need to confirm.

That is the purpose of this thread.

I would like to ask and encourage all CS11 users to post in this thread if they also experience the same "problem" with the fan (abnormal noises that are clearly distinguishable from normal operation) or anything fan-related, especially if you have experienced them since you bought the notebook and haven't done anything that could "provoke" them (like dropping the notebook or hitting it in some way, blocking the ventilation vents, etc...). This is to have a general scope that this is not an isolated problem that is only happening to a few, and that way, perhaps Sony will take an interest and take the necessary measures to correct this problem if this, in fact, turns out to be a generalised problem.

I have already created a new case with e-Support regarding this issue. Note that these are brand new laptops that have been out on sale for barely a month, and now would be a good time to correct any problems that may arise. If this turns out to be a common problem for most CS11 users, then we should all contact Vaio-Link or e-Support and report the problem, so that Sony will take this problem into consideration if enough people have it.

Remember: the sooner, the better!

Also, perhaps it would also be of interest that those CS11 users that DON'T experience this problem also post in this thread, to see how many DO and how many DON'T... it may be interesting to also know.

Ok... without taking any more of your time, I leave this thread to fellow CS11 users and to anyone that might be able to lend a helping hand. Thanks!!!

Hi Friends,

I'm another Troubled User of Vaio CS series. I bought CS17G model from my home country last year in Dec 2008. I did not use it much initially because I had Dell in my office and so I did not notice the "errr" sound it makes. Now that I've come to UK for studies, it's been more than 4 months since I've been listening to this annoying fan noise at every time of the day. As soon as I noticed this sound, I called up Vaio support for help as my laptop was still in warranty. But the response I got was quiet weird. They asked me to change some settings first. But when it did not work, they asked me to send the laptop to the service centre for which they asked me to pay 250.00 GBP (approx.). I was so shocked! I denied so they suggested me to send it to my home country.

After searching more on Sony, I found an announcement saying Sony is providing 2 year support to the troubled customers of CS series. It made me bit relieved. But then I called the Vaio support centre of my home country and got another great reply. They asked me to send it to them via courier or by any means for repair. Firstly I denied as I did not know anyone travelling to my home country. But they scared me saying that the Fan will disturb other components of your laptop and it will stop working soon. I was so scared that I decided to send it home by DHL/DTDC service which was another impossible thing for a student like me. They asked me to pay 40% of the price of laptop(for some customs issue) + courier charges. I became hopeless. javascript:smilie(':smileysad:') I still tried a number of times to convince Sony to help me with this problem. But they stick to the same answer.

I searched various posts of people going through the same problem and due to unavailability of feasible solution, decided to ignore the sound, use it nicely and look for another solution. But now my system has started crashing and it does not seem to be any software issue as my antivirus updates are latest and new and I've not found any infected item on my laptop in these days. Its a BIG trouble for me now. I'm a student with all my assignments and important data stored on this machine. Now I've to take back ups every now and then which is disturbing my work a LOT. I don't understand how can I make Sony understand this issue. But its really heartbreaking that after buying my favourite laptop which was definitely expensive, I'm experiencing these issues and Sony doesn't provide international support to troubled customers like me.

I'm regretting for not buying Dell in place of Vaio which actually believes in serving customers and not fooling customers. What should I do with this box now? Can Vaio support do ANYTHING about this?? After going through this complete post, it seems Sony is still reluctant to change laptop fans or laptops to please their customers. I think they don't value customers anymore. It has left me in a helpless situation where I have no hope of going to my home country for another 1 year and my laptop is crashing. Thanks Sony!! I would think 100 hundred times before buying any product from you and I'm sure, after so much trouble, the answer I'll get is NO.

So please Thalamus, I really need your help. Should I contact Sony Europe or something to get my VAIO fixed? Because the portuguese guys apparently don't know what they are doing..

Hi Thalamus,

Thanks for your response!

My home country is India. Firstly I had tried to put this post on India's site. But the site is not up since a long time which is why I had no other option left thn posting it here.

I can understand that every person's time is valuable and so is mine too. This problem is wasting my time a LOTT. I'm in the middle of assignments and work when fan keeps making noise and my laptop turns off ANYTIME! Isn't that annoying? And I believe, 'SONY' should help me with this and not Sony,UK or Sony, India in particular. If not, than surely I've made a mistake..

Cheers!

Yes Sony should help you but Sony Europe do not reply to posts on the forum. Club VAIO is a self help user forum, most of the members including the Club Vaio Experts are NOT Sony employees but user like yourself who assist in solving members problems where possible..

Did you purchase overseas warranty when you bought your vaio in India.?

If not then unfortunately I doubt Sony Europe will consider repairing your vaio, you'll have to arrange repair with Sony India.. :slight_frown:

Alternatively, a cheaper option, see if a local repairer in your area can give you a quote for fixing your Vaio's fan..

Hi Thalamus,

Yes I have, thank you. I was waiting for Sony to contact me before I replied to your post. Unfortunately I'm still waiting for their call. Are you sure they know my phone number/email?

Thank you
