Hi everyone!
If you have recently bought a new VGN-CS11 series notebook, I'd ask that you take a moment to read this post.
Since I unboxed the new notebook, I have been experiencing strange noises from the fan unit evey time it operates. Before, it used to be simply that every time the fan stopped working, it made a soft "growl" noise (probably due to some internal vibration) for a mere second or two. Recently, however, it has also begun to make a strange, barely audible "clicking sound" as the fan starts up and operates, accompanied by the "growl" at the end, like before. At first, I was led to believe that it was just the normal operating noise that the fan made (although quite annoying!), but due to these recent developments, I am more and more convinced that this is some problem or malfunction that perhaps, will only get worse with time.
Other CS11 users have already posted in the thread "Problem with fan!!" that they also experience this problem, and, from what I've been able to gather, it does not seem like an isolated problem... but this is what we need to confirm.
That is the purpose of this thread.
I would like to ask and encourage all CS11 users to post in this thread if they also experience the same "problem" with the fan (abnormal noises that are clearly distinguishable from normal operation) or anything fan-related, especially if you have experienced them since you bought the notebook and haven't done anything that could "provoke" them (like dropping the notebook or hitting it in some way, blocking the ventilation vents, etc...). This is to have a general scope that this is not an isolated problem that is only happening to a few, and that way, perhaps Sony will take an interest and take the necessary measures to correct this problem if this, in fact, turns out to be a generalised problem.
I have already created a new case with e-Support regarding this issue. Note that these are brand new laptops that have been out on sale for barely a month, and now would be a good time to correct any problems that may arise. If this turns out to be a common problem for most CS11 users, then we should all contact Vaio-Link or e-Support and report the problem, so that Sony will take this problem into consideration if enough people have it.
Remember: the sooner, the better!
Also, perhaps it would also be of interest that those CS11 users that DON'T experience this problem also post in this thread, to see how many DO and how many DON'T... it may be interesting to also know.
Ok... without taking any more of your time, I leave this thread to fellow CS11 users and to anyone that might be able to lend a helping hand. Thanks!!!
Hi Vamp!
Do you have any news from sony? I am waiting to find out what will happen because I want to change my AW11 M/H with the CS red.
Hi Skyberia, pezbaerchen, lewchenko, maja-rossi, txuse, hpacheco, SHAZ47, recessional, mwikstrom, Nutzer21 & coral pink..
Without comparing your CS's I guess you cannot say if you're all hearing the same noise, therefore it would be difficult to know if this is normal or if your Vaio has another problem..
So with that in mind we have asked Vaio-Link Support to contact each of you individually..

Hi!
It's been quite a while, but I haven't gotten my laptop back until only a few days ago, and, even then, I decided to observe it for a few days in order to give you guys a more detailed assessment.
Okay, what I can confirm is that yes, the fan unit of my laptop has been replaced by a new one. However, the problem is that they have NOT replaced it with a fan from another manufacturer, as they told me, but with a replacement fan they must have for CS's, in other words, the same fan that they ship with new ones, the same ones that have problems.
As you might imagine, it has been a real disappointment for me, as I expected a serious company such as sony to, at least, hold true to their word. However, I'll explain what happened to me and how I came to know that they had substituted it with one of these faulty CS fans...
Okay, when I received it I put it to the test and listened to the fan for a long while, listening for even the slightest noise before, after or during operation. I was very glad, for the fan DID NOT MAKE ANY SORT OF NOISE!! It was a perfect fan, in every way. However, a few hours later, when I was using the laptop before going to bed late at night, when everything was quiet, every time the fan stopped I began to hear a very soft "click" noise. At first I confused it with the noise our hard drives usually make every once in a while, but as I listened closer to it, I realised that it was every time the fan stopped. It's the exact same noise that can be heard in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMl9-VqQ1Ug, so that's how I knew that they had replaced it with one of the fans that come with every CS... it would be too much of a coincidence that a totally different fan from a different manufacturer would make these peculiar noises. Therefore, you can imagine the disappointment that overcame me when this set in.
Nevertheless, just to comfort myself somewhat, I had to remind myself that it was a barely audible noise (as you can see in the video) that was nothing like the tremendous noise that I used to have with my anterior fan.
However, when I turned it on the next day, I was once again surprised to find out that the fan made no noise at all!!! It wasn't because I couldn't hear it because, believe me, I have developed quite a fine ear (as I imagine you all have) for listening for even the slightest noise that comes from the fan unit. However, a few days later, it was doing the same "click" noise when it stopped, almost like a "chirp". During these past few days I have come to realise that it makes that noise whenever it wants to... sometimes it does, and sometimes it doesn't.
All in all, in my particular case, it is quite an improvement from my previous situation, since I've passed from a noisy fan that ALWAYS made noise, even when in operation, to a fan that doesn't make any sort of weird noise, only that occasional "chirp" every once in a while and which, most of the time, can't even be heard unless you're actually listening for it with your ear right next to the vent. That's why, because I can't afford to lose my laptop for another two or three weeks, I haven't called them and sent it back to replace it with a fan from another manufacturer which is what they had promised to me from the start. As long as this noise doesn't evolve to become what I used to hear with the other fan, I won't call them again to have it repaired, since I have no guarantee that they will actually do what they told me. I can only hope that this noise doesn't escalate until my warranty expires, time at which I will personally rip out this god forsaken fan and replace it with one that I myself will buy... we're talking about a spare part that can't cost more than 3-5€, for heaven's sake!!
Anyway, all that I can recommend here is that those that have a very noisy fan (like the one in the youtube video that I had posted a long time ago) to call and have it replaced, at least asking for garantees that they will replace it with one from a different manufacturer. However, if your case is that little "chirp" which can be heard in the video that I've linked in this post, then I'd have quite a think about it before having it shipped, only to have it returned with a "new" fan that will, with time, develop the same noise, if they do what they've done to me.
I would've liked to have this fan issue ended in this post, posting something like "the problem's gone!!", but it has not been that way. However, this is my personal experience, and I can only hope that my opinion here will help you guys in taking steps towards solving your particular problems, or that what they did to me will not be done to you. If I post again here it will be to answer any questions that you might have or if the "new" fan I've got has gone whacko and once again makes that horrid noise. Know then that I will explicitly demand that a new fan from a totally different manufacturer be the one that they replace mine with, but, right now, it just doesn't weigh out for me to have it shipped back and do this all over again, with no garantee that this will be repeated.
Good luck to all of you, and don't hesitate to ask any sort of question.
Hi Thalamus,
having the "So disturbing starting every 20 sec. for a moment" -problem like verdas has, i contacted Vaio esupport on January, 17 (before you asked vaio link esupport, so i don´t know if they wanted to contact me).
I send them also the link of the youtube video. They answerd i should contact the store i bought it from, because it seems not to work properly....
I did and sent it in. Now i´m waiting to get it back

Hi Skyberia, pezbaerchen, lewchenko, maja-rossi, txuse, hpacheco, SHAZ47, recessional, mwikstrom, Nutzer21 & coral pink..
Have any of you been contacted by Sony support yet, if so what was the outcome of the conversation.?
hello,i haven't been contacted...
Hi coral pink,
I'm extremely disappointed to read that you've not been contacted yet by Vaio-Link support..
hello vamp.I too have a soft noise, not like the first video you posted...it occurs just after the fan stops ,it lasts one second and it's like a "prr"...i can hear it only in a quiet room..well if i concentrate i can hear even in a room with some noise, but generally is not udibile unless in a quiet room. When i open the pc for the first time in a day there's not noise for a while..as time passes it begins.if you say that your vaio returned better than before but not totally fixed well that's pointless for me to send it.I hope the noise won't become worse with time and with use since i'm planning to keep my vaio for some years...i really want to thank you for you kindness and your help and for having posted every step of your odissey...
Hi Thalamus,
i sent it to the store i bought it from. Because the store ist my tradepartner.
The notebook was absolutely new and esupport said, because of that i can change it at my store as a "faulty new device". (don´t know the right word in english)
And the store said yes, and I should send it in.
They got the Notebook since thursday one week ago. Now i´m waiting to get any news from them...or better a quiet notebook ;o)
