I've read the announcement on the forum, and it seems to me that Sony are being disengenuous by not saying which VAIOs are affected. I would like to know so I can decide if I need to take any steps - after all, it's my home that might go up in smoke, not theirs!
Hi asianmaze and all,
Actually I received an updated statement:
Select VAIO PCs utilized the battery cells called to attention in recent announcements. However, the system configurations on these Sony products do not enhance the potential of overheat incidents and differ from those of other manufacturers. We believe that they are generally very safe. At present, we have not received (nor are aware of) any incident reports related to these products. Generally, the VAIO system configuration including design, layout and power system etc. differs from other PC manufacturers. In addition VAIO adopt its own design for safety technology, and Sony considers there is no danger of emission of smoke or fire from these products.
At this time, Sony anticipates no further recalls of battery packs using these particular battery cells.

Thanlks for such a quick reply, but, as I said, I had already read this - and it was last week, before today's recall. I stand by my first post - Sony were saying the same thing about no danger when the Dell story broke. It looks less plausible now, with the Apple recall.
Lets keep this discussion going in this thread as it's very important, and we don't want people having to look through multiple posts for the answer
Sony seem to have clearly stated that the Tech in there own Products is different to the Tech they ship for 3 party users like Dell and Apple.Fair comment I suppose.I periodically(daily)always have a feel around my Vaio for warm spots ect, especially the Battery. The System is very cool to the touch. If you do feel your Battery casing getting warm, take it back and ask for a replacement.Or ring Sony and tell them you want a replacement sent out ASAP.
