BOOTDISK??? crash!

What is a bootdisk for and wich is the best program, because I got a crash, had to use vaio recovery disc, C disc totally lost, had a back up but was a true copy so that won't work putting it back because it won't activate, so had to set up each programm etc etc, so please help if it will happen again, thanks
