Broken Keyboard - FE31H

Hi,

I've got a FE-31H laptop.. but random keys on the keyboard have stopped working. No spilled liquid on it, so thats not the problem.

Alphabetical letters that DO work: CDEFGHIJLMNOPQR TUVWXYZ
Others broken are: down scroll arrow

Quite strange to only have random keys stopping over the keyboard. Was considering replacing the keyboard, but don't know how to remove the current one. Anyone know how or have any other suggestions?

Hi Jembanin and welcome to Club Vaio.

It will be one of these three faults: -

1. You have a poor connection to the main board
2. Your keyboard is physically broken inside
3. You have a software problem

I attach the manual for your model at the bottom of this post. Check the ribbon connector is not damaged and it is securely connected to the motherboard.

If you need a repacement, try Sony Support but they will only repair the unit which will be expensive. You can order a keyboard from here: -

http://www.nexttronics.com/reference/sony/fe7/int-FE51B-H.htm

for $124.21 plus shipping (it will cost you about £88 altogether).

Before doing this you may wish to reinstall your keyboard drivers or buy a cheap external USB keyboard and try that.

I have a spare (wireless) keyboard - so I've been using that for weeks since the problem started. This is me just getting fed up of it now, and wanting to try and sort it out. Will take a look at the instructions and have another go

I can go into the depths of a normal PC with no problems, but the inside of a laptop is all new to me, so those should help quite a bit

Thanks for that!
