Hello guys
I am trying to find a compatible firewire cable with my vaio. However, since it is my first time to buy a firewire cable, I do not know what to look for. My vaio model is VGN-FS415B, and on the firewire slot it is written S400 which, I presume, has something to do with the compatible firewire cable.
Would anyone shed some light on this matter please?
Best regards,
To be honest you will be making trouble for yourself. You are better off using a wireless card network as firewire is a nightmare to get working unless it is a Vaio to Vaio link. Belkin firewire cable is £25 for your model to a standard fitting firewire plug on a desktop. A 54g PCI Belkin wireless card is £16 and the 54 mbps is not as fast but at least it works
Hi Troubles-Maker,
The Firewire connector on your notebook will be 4 pin, so you will need to establish what you require at the device end. This may be 4, 6, or a small FireWire device that will not have any power connectors.
If you let us know what you are trying to connect to then I am sure that someone will be able to advise further…
Hello,
Thanks for your quick replies guys.
Rich912: I will be actually using the firewire cable to connect my laptop to other laptops to transfer data between them (from and to my laptop).
Thanks
In that case, assuming that you don’t have wireless facility on all machines (if you do then follow Tony’s suggestion) I suggest an Ethernet crossover cable.
Hello again,
My laptop has the wireless connection feature, and I actually set up an ad hoc connection between my laptop and another one and enabled the file sharing feature on both laptops, but I was not able to access the shared folders from either of them. This is why I started thinking of buying the firewire cable.
Would it be possible for you to give me some guidance on how to access the shared folders?
Regards
Hi Troubles-Maker,
Have you tried disabling your firewall(s) – especially if you are using Norton
I've always used Firewire for networking. It is fast and latency is far more short compared to LAN.
But
Microsoft has disabled DHCP on Firewire in Windows Vista. If you want to setup a Firewire Network in Windows Vista, just forget it. It's not possible with Vistas own Firewire drivers.
Whatever you do go to Maplins and save a bundle, Sony charge nearly £20 for one when you can get one for around £4 there.
