Can I upgrade VGN-Z5 memory to 8GB?

To make full use of Windows 7 Professional operating system, can I upgrade the memory to 2x4GB?

Looking at the Specifications for the VGN-Z51WG, it looks like the RAM can be increased to 8GB (2 X 4GB).

Can anyone say if this is the same for the VGN-Z5?

Is it functionally the same as the VGN-Z51WG?

both give the maximum as 4 GB.

What would happen if I put in 8 GB? Would it damage the laptop? Or not work at all? Or only use 4 GB of it?

What causes the limit?

Hi robm25,

The memory limit is restricted by the chipset and architecture of the motherboard.

Although we have had reports in the past that fitting more than the supported memory did work with some models this is a rarity. The chances are that the machine will not boot and yes damage may possibly occure even If it does.

Although companies such as Crucial offer a guarantee of compatibility this is only for modules sold within the maximum supported guidelines provided by the computer manufacturer.

Your choice but I would err on the side of caution.

Thanks for your response. I also sent an email to Sony support and they have come back with:

"Thank you for contacting Sony regarding memory upgrade option on your VAIO VGN-Z5. We are happy to confirm that you can upgrade the memory to 8 GB by installing two memory modules 4GB each instead of the current 2GB modules.

Please make sure that the memory modules have the following specifications:

Memory type: DDR3

Memory speed: 1066 MHz"

This is at odds with Mr Memory and Crucial limits.

Also, the Crucial memory scanner says that the current memory is 2 x DDR3 PC3-10600 • CL=9 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1333 • 1.35V • 256Meg x 64 (which I'm guessing is 1333 MHz).

(NB Crucial don't seem to sell 1066 MHz)

Does their response make sense?

Hi Rob,

The response makes sense insomuch as other VGN-Z5 models do support up to 8 Gb RAM - what I don't understand is that Crucial clearly state the max memory is 4 Gb. I suggest that you give them a call to clarify the situation and if possible get an undertaking that if the machine will not recognize 8 Gb that they will refund. From experience Crucial support are very helpful so hopefully they will investigate and get back to you.

Don't worry about memory speed as RAM is backwardly compatible although you will be limited to the speed determined by the motherboard. The 8 Gb kit Crucial sell for the VGN-Z51WG/B would seem to be the same specification as currently fitted.
