Compilation CDs & Featured Artists

A question has sprung to mind whilst I'm currently ripping a compilation CD to my VP.

When I'm playing a compilation CD on my VP how do I know who the artist is?. Currently the only information I see is - CD Name and Title and Song Title. So, is there a way to also see any featured artists (if that field is completed within the MP3 file) whilst listening?

Currently the only information I see is - CD Name and Title and Song Title.

What's the difference between a CD's name and title, surely one of those should be the Artist?

I find when I copy compilations or CD's with songs who feature artists that my Artist list swells enormously so now when I browse through my artists I have loads of names with only one song and also loads with the same name eg:

Kanye West
Kanye West featuring.....
Kanye West featuring..... & .......

I prefer to name my compilations with the Artist name "Various" and just cut off all the feature artists on albums with loads of guest appearances.

True, one should have read Artist, Another Title, and the last Song Title.

The problem I have is that with the software I'm using (Musicmatch Jukebox 10) to rip CDs a compilation CD automatically gets the artist name - 'Various Artists' and the name of the compilation such as 'Q - the album disk 1' and each track gets the song title such as 'Dolphins were Monkeys'. The actual artist name appears in a field called - featured artist.

It appears that SS and the VP don't recognise the field - featured artist. Unless you know of a clever way to fix this - either with the initial rip or with SS. I hope this makes my question clearer.

i think the vp does support that kind of extra info, but only when the files are atrac! thank you sony. i'd go for using a program called music brainz (it's free) which identifies your tracks and tags them with name etc. according to a preset standard. don't know if that's any use to you

Hi bentate,

Tried out CDex today (recommended by my works PC help desk guru!) with success. Seems like your idea of changing the ripper has paid off. So, from now on I'll be using CDex for compilations and Jukebox 10 for normal CDs (as is automatically adds the album art)

Cheers
