connecting two VAIOs using the iee1394 cable

Hi Folks, just bought myself a new VAIO and want to copy my documents from the old to the new one.

The VAIO documentation tells me this is possible via the 1394/ilink/firewire connection. I've got a 4 pin ilink cable and have connected the 2 machines together. The machines show that they are connected together in the '1394 connection' in Network connections.

Now that I have connected my 2 machines together, how do I go about accessing the files from one PC to the other? I'm drawing a blank with 'New connections manager' and the 'set up home network' options.

Do I need 3rd party software? or am I missing something obvious?

Thanks in advance

Dave.

Hi Dave,

Go to Network Connections and right-click on your 1394 connection. Choose Properties and in the window that opens, highlight 'Internet Protocol TCP/IP' and click on the Properties Tab.

Click on the button "Use the following IP address" and for one PC enter 192.168.1.1 and in the subnet mask 255.255.255.0
On the second PC enter 192.168.1.2 and 255.255.255.0

It should all now work - just make sure you use a different IP from your local network (if you have one set up).

EDIT: You may have to 'share' the directory you want to copy from.

You may also have to adjust your firewall settings.
