DTS and Lip Sync problems with SPDIF on XL-201

Hi y'all,

Anyone having the same problems using DTS through an AV receiver as me?

I have an XL201 and a DAVS-880 (Sony AV receiver). I have it connected via the SPDIF (Optical) output.

When watching ordinary TV - fine. I get a good PCM downmix as I would expect. When I switch over to a DVD (which by the way is on a hard drive) and use a Dolby Digital soundtrack, the AV receiver picks up the new feed and automatically switches over to Dolby Digital output. So far so good...

When I select the DTS soundtrack from a DVD (again on a hard drive), I get the AV receiver to switch over to DTS nicely, and it sounds great - BUT, the sound is ahead of the image - by about 1-1.5 seconds!!

I am using the Nvidia decoder - as recommended. I have set the lip sync slider all the way to both ends, and no different! (The lip sync slider only goes to a maximum of +/- 200ms). I have selected both SPDIF Audio and Data mode - no difference. It seems that no matter what I do, I won't be able to listen to the high quality sounds of DTS without the picture being VERY noticeably behind!

Anyone else having similar problems? Anyone got a different decoder package that they have NO problems with?

I have also used (and payed for (£50!) :slight_frown: ) the CyberLink Power DVD decoder set with the optional audio package - but that is a whole other thread in iteself!!

Any help would be appreciated.

Ben..

Ok, quick update:

After doing some more fiddling, I think I may have noarrowed things down a bit...

I was using Austin Powers Goldmember as the test movie as it has a 6.1 DTS soundtrack. As I said before, there was a lip sync problem of about +1 - 1.5 seconds.

However, it did occur to me that I had not tried a 5.1 DTS soundtrack, so I switched the test movie to Back To The Future, and selected the DTS track - hey presto - lip sync problems no more!!

So, in conclusion, only the 6.1 DTS tracks are affected and NOT 5.1 tracks, and ONLY when outputting DTS. All Dolby Digital tracks work perfectly.

I suppose for now, I can put up with it, since there really aren't a great deal of 6.1 DTS soundtracks on most mainstream movies, but it may become a problem in the future.

I shall wait for my copy of Vista to be delivered from Sony and see if that makes any difference...

I take it from the amount of viewers to this thread, and the lack of replies to it means that there aren't any peeps out there who have had the same problems...

Well, hopefully this thread will be of use to anyone in my position in the future.

TTFN - Have fun...
