DVD/CD Sound poor on Vaio VGN-SZ5XWV/C

I~ am very disappointed with the sound volume on my new Sony Vaio VGN-SZ5XWN/C. I have set the volume to maximum. Can anyone advise? Is there a problem with the sound card or is there a way to increase the volume. Does anyone else have this problem.
