Hello
I've had my fill of reading thousands of threads and help notes regarding problems I have with my Sony Vaio VGN215M DVD DW D56A drive. Has anyone out there ever found a solution I wonder? Would be very grateful for help.
Had my notebook for about 4 years now, never recorded CD/DVD before. Recently CD audios made OK. On trying a DVD +R recording, found that Record Now would not acknowledge a blank DVD. It recognises a DVDRW. Sounds as if drive is trying to read then gives up, drive tray refuses to open so used special release button or pin. Tried downloading all the Sony Vaio updates, firmware for 56A (which was from PFS1 to 3, though, not 1-2?). Uninstalled DVD drive and reinstalled, still same problem. In desperation, downloaded CDBurnerXP but that seems to have the same problem.
I don't want to perform a Recovery - cannot be sure my Recovery Disks ever recorded either! (If I try to put a disk in, will I be able to select just to reinstall Record Now?
I'm not into fiddling too much with computer jargon, but boy have I read a lot! But, sometimes too much information and a little knowledge makes things a whole lot worse!
I tried to send an e-mail request to Support, but accidentally send the message before finalising it - though they should have got the idea of my problem, that was about a month ago now and have not heard...
Thanks to anyone who can offer any info..
Regards
Elm
will I be able to select just to reinstall Record Now?
Hello Thalamus
Thanks for responding, and so quickly.
Do you think the reinstall will solve my problem, or is there something else lurking (or not) in my little friend's memory?
Should I go anywhere near upper/lower filters?
Lot's of threads on this seem to have users giving up and adding a new DVDRW. Don't want to lose faith in it yet!

No good. Tried reinstalling Record Now. Nothing different.
Any further ideas appreciated......
With thanks

Hi Elm,
there have been several posts in the past regarding the DW-D56A drive and unfortunately it usually ends with a replacement needed..
Have you checked in device manager for an warning icon or error number.?
Have you tried using a CD/DVD lens cleaner.?
