Laptop not reading discs

For some reason it isn't reading any discs at all, It won't read data discs or proper DVDs or even cds? However itunes picked up the dics I was putting in to convert the songs, but when putting the discs in without itunes open, nothing happens. I've gone to start>run>cd drive:F and theres nothing in it.

Getting a bit fed up now, this is the second major fault (first being recovery partition doesnt exist)and its 3 months old.

Please someone help.

You are going to have to give us more information.

What model Vaio do you have ?
What program are you trying to use to play DVD and CD ?
What DVD and CD are you trying to play ?
Have you removed any programs from your Vaio ? It needs WinDVD to work.
Does your F:\ drive appear in My Computer ?
Are there any errors against the drive in Device Manager ?

1. Sony Vaio VGN-FE31H
2. Whatever should have been on the laptop, I haven't added any.
3. Any DVD, any CD, or any data disc that I have made from my desktop.
4. I have removed things, but just the pointless stuff e.g ISP icons such as AOL. I may have deleted something by mistake, but it's unlikely I would have removed a program named WinDVD.
5. Yes it does.
6. Where is device manager.

Thanks, Matt.

Device Manager can be found by right clicking my computer and clicking properties. Click on the hardware tab and the device manager button.

Ok device manager says the DVD/CD ROM Drives are working properly, however it says 'Location: Location 0 (0)' Is that ok?

That's fine, just means it's on the first IDE cable as the master

Ok. So any ideas what I should do? Could auto-run be disabled or something?

When you're in device manager, right click it and uninstall it.

Reboot the VAIO

Reboot as in simply click restart, or use recovery disks? I think you mean the first, but just making sure!
