line input problems vaio vgn-fs415b

Is there any way of conmuting the mic input to line in this model? I am running XP home edition and the audio chipset is a Realtek AC97. I tried everything I know even sonic stage masterig studio but the signal keeps coming through mic input and therefore totally saturated. I am starting to think that the only solution it would be to purchase an external sound card which is expensive and I wouldn't like doing it. it is a real shame that something so simple cannot be done in such an esxpensive product. Any help will be most welcome. thanks

Go to the Realtek control panel and change it to a line input
