Loss of Spell Checker in Outlook Express

Hello Gentlemen,

No doubt this is a common problem but I failed to find a forum reference, sorry.

I have just installed MS Office Pro 2007 onto my laptop and have lost the spell check facility within Outlook Express. The only dictionary left in Oulook Express is the French one.

I have done a Google search for this problem and the solutions suggested are;

Use MS Office Outlook, which I do not wish to do
Re-install the UK English dictionary from the Office 2000 or 2003 discs, which I don't have

What I would ideally like, of course, is to re-install or install a UK Enlish dictionary as it used to be, ie operating from within Outlook Express seemlessly.

Grateful for any help please.

Gyron

Hi Gyron,

I don’t use Outlook Express but I understand that Office 2007 installs some language files that are incompatible with Outlook Express. Even if you uninstall Office 2007 it does not restore your old language files.

Have you considered a third party spell checker such as Spell Checker For OE from Snapfiles ? It’s free and from what I understand works fine within OE.

Hi Gyron,

not sure if this will work but it looks promising..

Open the following link Download Spell Checker For OE.

Good evening Rich and Thalamus,

Thanks for your replies which were the same - great minds and all that!

ie they were both from 'snapfiles'.

Unfortunately the software would not download onto my laptop since an error message came up saying the file is trying to download to an address that is not a valid Win 32 application!

Thanks for try anyway. any other ideas?

Kind regards to both,

Gyron

Not sure what the problem is but I have downloaded and attached the file....

Take the usual precaution of scanning before running.

Hi Gyron,

I was also able to download the file..

Hopefully you won't have any problems using the file that Rich has attached..

Hello Rich (and thanks Thalamus),

I have tried to download your file but failed, getting the following message;

Internet Explorer cannot get attachment? attach = 2190 from Club Vaio Sony.co.uk
Internet Explorer was not able to open this site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later.

Have tried several times to no avail. Also tried again from the actual site with and without Firewall & virus Protection disabled with continued failure.

Sorry to be a 'pain' and thanks for continued patience.

Regards,

Gyron

Hi Gyron,

The problem is almost certainly to do with the security settings of Internet Explorer.

You could try changing the settings – following is copied from Allexperts.com...

Open Internet Explorer

Click Tool--->> internet options.

then click the security Tab..

Click Custom Level
and see if in the download section
file download is checked.
Also it may help if you add the specific website ( your email website ) to the trusted sites list. [ click the green trusted sites icon and then click Add ]

and repeat the process ...

Also the Advanced tab..

Scroll down to Secutiry section
and uncheck ' do not save encrypted pages " option
then close all Browsers opened..
..or better restart your machine for changes to take effect.”

If that doesn’t solve the problem then download Firefox and that should work.

EDIT: Forget IE and use Firefox

Hello Rich912,

Apologies for not replying to you earlier but was visiting a sick relative.

All the settings you suggested were set correctly but still I still could not get a successful download. Before taking your last suggestion onboard (Firefox), I tried the 'Major Geeks' site download and that worked first time - strange!

So, I do now have a spell check facility working within OE6 albeit the USA English Dictionary version.

Once agian, thank both you and Thalamus for your help.

Kind regards,

Gyron

You're welcome gyron, and I'm pleased to hear that you at least have a compromise.

It is certainly a mystery as to why the Major Geeks site download worked and the other two didn't
