my DVD-rom totally died! Help!

Hi guys, I have a VAIO (K-215S). Several days ago, when I tried to install a software from a CD, the system crashed. After that, my DVD-rom never works again. It cannot read any disks, so I cannot backup my files, terrible! Does some of you have such experience before? And how did you solve the problem? Thanks in advanced!

Is the drive showing up in device manager and if so are there any error messages? If it is reported as working try uninstalling the device, re-boot and let Windows re-install the drivers.

If this has no effect then have a look for a firmware update on
Vaio-Link.
