No sound on laptop...

Hello,

My little sound icon has the red cross on it...hovering the mouse over it says "No speakers or headphones are plugged in". When I click on it goes through the troubleshooting wizard and can't find a problem. I've tried re-installing drivers, etc. No sound comes through built in speakers or headphones.

My question is, will wireless speakers work?

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris,

Whether wireless speakers, or USB speakers for that matter, will work depends on the nature of the problem.

It would have been helpful to know your model and current OS but check the following.

1 Open Services (click start and type services.msc in the search field) and check that Windows Audio Service is started and running and is set as Automatic start.

2 Right click the speaker icon in the system tray and select Playback Devices. Make sure that Speaker/HP is selected as the default device - If so can you see any movement in the volume bar when playing sounds/music?

3 Check Device Manager for any errors reported for the audio device.

4 If this problem only happened recently you could try a system recovery back to a date when you know it was working.
