Iv'e had this machine for a year now and only now getting round to try to solve this annoying problem. Turn PC on, do some work. Get up and leave for, lets say...over an hour (perhaps more) with the machine turned on. Come back and there is always (I don' know a good way to describe it but I'll try) a kind of stutter to the machines responses. For example, moving the mouse to move the cursor round in circles on the screen will result in the cursor moving, then freezing for a moment, then moving again, then freezing and so on. Same goes for running an application, Word or Photoshop or whatever. It makes the machine almost impossible to use, so a reboot is always required. Then all is well again.
BTW, checking the Windows Task Manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL) doesn't reveal much (to me anyway, I'm no expert) though I do always think that the CPU useage is higher than I would expect for a basically idle machine, say 20%.
Phew, sorry for all that. If anyone could help I would be everso gratefull.
Are you running XP or 2000 - if you are then try turning off the Indexing Service - instructions on how to do this are in Help and Support,

Thanks for your prompt reply. I shall give it a try in the next day or two and let you know the outcome.

The indexing service gathers information about files on your disks to provide faster searching.
As Bob said, "Help and Support" on the "Start" menu has all the details.
I'll turn that off too, seems to be wasting resources.
Well it would appear that the indexing service isn't running. So it's back to the drawing board. Any other ideas will be gratefully received.
