Playing DVDs from different regions

I am in the Uk and can play UK DVDs on my Sony Vaio PCV-V1/G. Is there any way that I can alter some settings so I can play US DVDs as well - in fact all regions?

Many thanks,
Anne

Hi

You can change the region but I wouldn't advise it as it will revert to that region format and you won't be able to change it back again. I think.

So its not possible to change it to region free (like you can do with a DVD player)??

Hi Lizardlady,

You could try searching Google on ways to watch a DVD Region Free..

As TR stated in the DVD properties you have a limited number of times to change your DVD region...

I would be happy to hear a solution but nothing seems to work with RPC-2 compliant drives.

All modern drives cannot be hacked to be region free, unless you try a firmware hack.

William is right - you buy according to the area in which you live or buy the product.

With most laptops, you get maybe two or three chances to change the region in software before the system is then 'locked' to that region. This seems to survive a complete PC rebuild as well so it has to be linked to the drive microcode.

For most domestic DVDs the de-regionalisation is either built into the appliance or is an additional ROM that allows the other region settings to be invoked.

There are programs on the web that may or may not give you the option to run region-free but my advice is to be very careful. Sony are not dumb and if they thought that there was a way around their protection, they would have sealed it by now.

Well said,

and (to the original poster) don't blame Sony, its the film industry who are responsible.
