Problem opening a word doc

I downloaded openoffice about 6 weeks ago and all was fine but today I tried opening a word document sent to me by email and I get a file download box saying getting file information and nothing seems to happen, where as before the file would open straight away.

Any ideas?

What is the file extension? Is it .docx?

Word 2007 has changed the file extension for Word documents so it is unreadable by previous versions of Word and third party software like Open Office.

There is a compatibility pack for previous versions of Word here: -

but for Open Office, either you will have to wait for Open Office 3.0 which is due to be released next month or follow the list of options here (including installing the above Microsoft Pack): -
