Hi Angus,

XP can't burn DVDs but I would expect Nero to cope - what version of Nero are you using?

Does the drive PLAY DVDs?

Have a look in Device Manager -> DVD/CD-ROM Drives. Are there any Yellow warning triangles? Does it say the drive is working properly? What is the installed drive called (who makes it)?

You may have a faulty drive but check everything else first.

i have NERO 8

yes i can play dvd,s (very well) with quite a number of players

the drive is a SONY DVD RW DW Q58A
and there are no yellow triangles

just noticing my dvd player is in the F drive
if i open properties to the pie chart
there is no free space

is this right ?

This was a problem with the DW-D56A drive but is not as common with yours.

I suppose you have a few choices: -

1. Try a different make of discs. Avoid the Double Layer discs as these are very fussy about the player.
2. Try recovering your Vaio back to factory condition using the Vaio Recovery Utility (Drive C:\ only) as many of these problems are caused by conflicting software installed since purchase.
3. Buy an external DVD+/-RW USB drive - these are cheaper these days.
4. Replace the drive in your Vaio. Although you can buy a drive for £30 it is difficult to fit - the keyboard and palmrest have to be removed to get at the screws.

Not very attractive choices I'm afraid.

I would recommend the external drive - something like this one: -
