Sony Vaio VGN - AW11S

Hi all..

I bought my Vaio VGN - AW11S/B last month and have a couple of questions;

a) I keep getting random freezes, particularly while gaming or watching Dvds.. It won't let me run Task manager or return to Windows so I have to power off, not ideal!.. Often a message reads 'device not installed' (USB) which I rightly or wrongly attribute to my Logitech Nano VX mouse, although it also reports errors with Biometric device.. If I restart, remove the 'Unknown device' in Device manager, shut down and remove battery for five minutes it seems to reset and work fine for a while at least, though I suspect this will eventually damage the HDD.. Anyone have any idea what may be causing this problem and how to remedy?..

b) The specs for this machine state that the HDD is a 320gb spinning at only 4200rpm.. I notice on Ebuyer they are selling 7200rpm Toshiba drives:

i) How difficult would it be to change the drive?.. it says SATA 150 in the manual, is this just your atypical SATA connection?..
ii)Would the performance difference be appreciable?..

Thanks for taking the time to read this Newbie stuff, and I apologise if it has been covered elsewhere.. (search result came up negative)..

Regards..

Hi gerrardhino,

welcome to club VAIO.. :slight_smile:

I don't think you should be having to resolve problems like this on a new Vaio, I suggest you contact Sony Vaio support, you can do this either by phone or via e-Support, use the following link to find the contact details: Sony Vaio Support

Vaio-Support will probably suggest running the Vaio recovery utility to restore your back to factory settings, so you may want to do this before contacting them, make sure you backup important data first..
