Sony vaio vgn-n38e will not find wireless networks?

When I flick the wireless switch on the side of the laptop, the WLAN light never turns on. Perhaps this switch is broken, or is there a chance the wirless functionality is disabled somehow?

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can get the wireless detector back up and running?
