To Standby or Not?

New vaio user here with an FR395ep.

The standby option works brilliantly, my laptop is always plugged in, and the beauty is that it shutsdown and starts so quickly in standby.

Is it safe to constantly use standby (overnight etc) rather than using a proper shutdown and restart?

If you lose the power supply (e.g. running on battery and it runs out of charge or the battery falls out - it happens with the Dell!) then you'll lose your work. Hibernate is safer for longer rests from work. I would suggest using stand by only for short rests and moving between meetings etc.

You'll have to reboot every now and then to install the regular service packs / updates.
