Touch pad mouse stopped working on FE11S

Hi, I have the FE11S and the touch pad mouse has stopped working. The BUILT IN POINTING DEVICE is enabled in the VAIO CONTROL CENTRE and the laptop works fine with an external USB mouse.

I've carried out the following but without any success:

1 uninstalled driver and windows has reinstalled it upon restarting, if I am correct this is the SONY CONTROL NOTEBOOK DEVICE under HUMAN INTERFACE DEVICES in device manager
2 system restore going back 1 day
3 loaded safe mode from advanced boot options
4 loaded last known good configuration from advanced boot options
5 disk defrag / scan disk

In the C drive, if I am looking in the right place their is a folder called POINTING under C:\DRIVERS and when I manually try to update the driver from SONY CONTROL NOTEBOOK DEVICE in device manager, it points to a file called APFILTR.INF under POINTING but then after clicking, it says "the specified location does not contain information about your hardware" I was not sure if I am looking in the correct place?

I know reinstalling windows is a possible option, but just wanted to see if anyone has any advice. Any help on this problem will be great!! Thank you.

Hi speedoman,

Your model uses the Alps Pointing Device for Vaio software and drivers. This should be under Mice and other Pointing Devices in Device Manager. Nothing to do with Sony Notebook Control.

The easiest course of action is to download and reinstall Version 5.3.512.4 of the Driver and Control Utility from Sony USA Downloads

I am assuming you are using XP - if by chance you are using Vista you will need Version : 7.0.501.5 of the Alps driver from Sony Vaio-Link FE11S (it is listed under "Input Devices".
