Unable to connect to wireless network

I have a VIAO VGN-NW20SF and have been using a wireless network in the UK without any problems. I have recently moved to Australia and am staying with some friends but cannot connect my Viao to their wireless network. I have no problem connecting other devices so it has to be something to do with the Viao settings. When I check the status of the network it says that the IPv4 connectivity is connected but hte IPv6 has no internet access. I have tried to switch off the firewall but that doesn't help and I have tried to update the driver but that doesn't help. I can connect the computer by plugging in the ethernet cable but not the wireless. Any suggestions greatly appreciated as I am staying here for 3 months so could really use the wireless! Thank you

Hi zeenz and welcome.

What version of the WiFi driver do you have installed?  There is a driver update on the Support Website for your model Version 13.0.0.107 under the Windows 7 Latest Downloads here: -

http://www.sony.co.uk/support/en/product/VGN-NW20SF_S/updates

Alternatively, you can try to find the latest driver from the Intel website.  I don't know which wireless adapter you have, so I can't give a link - try the Intel Driver Update Utility here: -

http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect/wireless

Do you know if the wireless router has the latest firmware installed?  Are others connecting using Windows 7?

As a last resort, you could try disabling IPv6 and see if that helps - if it doesn't work then enable it again straight away.  It is worth a try to check if IPv6 is not supported by the ISP: -

Start button -> Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing Center -> Local Area Connection -> Properties -> uncheck th box in front of "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) -> OK

If you are still having problems, come back with the name of your Wireless Adapter from Device Manager and we can look for a driver update from Intel.

Firstly I would suggest you to turn on network discovery and check whether it helps to fix the issue. To do so, please follow the steps below:

1.    Open Advanced sharing settings by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type network, click Network and Sharing Center, and then, in the navigation pane, click Change advanced sharing settings.

2.    Click the chevron to expand the current network profile.

3.    Click Turn on network discovery, and then click Save changes. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
